Asheville's show, and why it keeps moving
For years the city's Independence Day celebration was Pack Square Park; in 2026 it became an all-day block party on the South Slope — Coxe to Buxton — with fireworks at 9:30 and a morning 5K from Pack Square. Read this year's card before you pick a spot; the venue has changed more than once. Two constants: the Asheville Tourists shoot fireworks after Friday home games and around the Fourth at HomeTrust Park, the renovated McCormick Field, which is the least-crowded way to see a show downtown; and Buncombe County runs its own celebration, for years at Lake Julian and in 2026 at the North Buncombe fields in Weaverville while the park is under construction.
The shows within an hour
- Hendersonville — a midmorning parade down Main Street, a full day at the Historic Courthouse, and Henderson County's fireworks at 9:30, launched from South Grove Street over downtown.
- Lake Junaluska — a multi-day celebration that ends with fireworks over the lake around 9:15 and floating lanterns on the water. The region's most photogenic show.
- Maggie Valley — the Backyard Fourth at the Festival Grounds on Soco Road, evening till 11, chairs and picnics welcome, fireworks after dark.
- Bryson City — Freedom Fest: the Firecracker 5K at 8, an all-day Everett Street festival, fireworks at 10 over the Tuckasegee.
- Cherokee — the Fourth of July Powwow and Fireworks: three days of dancing and a 20-minute show against the Smokies. Arrive an hour before the grand entry or the fireworks; the grounds fill.
- The High Country, an hour and three-quarters up — Boone parades down King Street at 11 and fires from Clawson-Burnley Park; Blowing Rock parades at 10 and Tweetsie Railroad's 9:30 show is the High Country's largest.
The mountain Fourth, practically
- Dusk is late — shows go at 9:15 to 10. Arrive an hour before; the roads out take about as long as the show did.
- A lake or a 3,000-foot town is in the 60s by fireworks time. Bring a layer.
- Towns spread the week out, and Lake Junaluska's celebration runs the better part of one, so two or three shows in a weekend is easy. The cards carry the actual nights.
- Leave the dog home.
Your own fireworks: the law
North Carolina allows sparklers, fountains, smoke and novelty items, and nothing that explodes or leaves the ground — firecrackers, rockets, Roman candles and mortars are illegal to possess or set off, a misdemeanor carrying up to $500 and six months. The tents over the Tennessee line sell what you can't legally bring back. In a dry summer a county burn ban shuts down even the legal stuff.
